SUPERVISES: 

There are no direct reports with this position.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:   

Under limited supervision, the Lead Small Engine Mechanic performs work, as well as leads a work team that performs work, to repair gasoline and diesel engines used to power landscape equipment, compressors, generators, pumps, and similar machines in accordance with trade standards. Lead also trains and directs the team on the proper use, care, and routine maintenance of all equipment used in the performance of landscape work and ensures inventory of tools and machinery is maintained.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:  

1. *Prioritize, assign and coordinate daily staff activities to ensure coverage, rebalancing as necessary for special projects and customer satisfaction;
2. *Train and assist workers in performing duties, working alongside them on the same tasks;
3. *Monitor progress of tasks and inspect completed work to ensure quality;
4. *Investigate discrepancies and report them to management, recommending improvements to
resolve issues;
5. *Know and train workers in the safe and proper use of products and equipment to meet quality and
safety standards;
6. *Repair gasoline and diesel engines used to power lawnmowers, garden tractors, weed whackers, chainsaws, blowers, chippers, edgers, snow removal equipment and similar tools/equipment;
7. *Uses hand tools, locates causes of trouble, dismantles engines, and inspects/examines parts for defects;
8. *Replaces or repairs parts, such as rings and bearings;
9. *Cleans and adjusts carburetors and magnetos, starts repaired engines and listens to sounds to test performance;
10. *May be responsible to monitor and maintain inventory of all tools, parts and equipment;
11. *May be responsible to obtains quotes for parts, services, and major repairs to ensure cost-effective maintenance solutions;
12. *May be responsible to coordinate transportation of equipment to and from repair facilities for all major repairs;
13. *Creates and maintains ongoing reports, detailing schedules of services and maintenance repairs, and submits them as required by the worksite;
14. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

• Three to five years previous experience performing similar work required, or a combination of less experience and formal technical training;
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to respond to questions from vendors, customers and management;
• Mathematical ability including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
• Ability to train employees in proper practices and procedures.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: 

High School Diploma or GED

 

CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES REQUIRED:  

The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements:

Valid Driver's License

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of
time with or without assistance:
 
• Maneuvering in and around equipment
• Bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, crawling
• Pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 35 pounds
• May be required to climb ladders and/or step stools

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  

Work is performed at a customer’s location in office, shop, warehouse, or outdoor environment. May require driving to and from worksite locations. Equipment can be located in crawl spaces, rooftops, and outside facility. Employees may be exposed to hazardous and/or toxic substances, electrical shock, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.
