POSITION SUMMARY: 
Under limited supervision, the Tractor Operator Lead Worker leads a work team of diverse individuals, prioritizing, assigning and coordinating team activities to perform grounds keeping operations including cutting grass in landscaped and non-landscaped areas of commercial and public grounds using gasoline or diesel powered tractors and associated implements. This job class requires practical skill and knowledge of grounds keeping practices, equipment, supplies and procedures and the ability to perform quality work with attention to knowing and using safe work practices. 

 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:
1. *Prioritize and assign tasks, including coordination of work schedules to ensure coverage, rebalancing as necessary for special projects and customer satisfaction.
2. *Inspect tractors and equipment per company requirements to ensure proper operation and safe condition. Coordinate with maintenance department or management to correct deficiencies.
3. *Train and assist workers in performing duties, working alongside them on the same tasks.
4. *Train workers in the safe and proper use of products and equipment to meet quality and safety standards.
5. *Drive a tractor (2000 lbs or greater) to move materials; draw implements; pull objects embedded in ground.
6. *Tow trailers.
7. *Pull cable of winch to raise, lower, or load heavy material or equipment.
8. *Fasten attachments such as graders, plows, rollers, mowers, backhoes, seeders or disc harrows to tractor.
9. *Monitor and review equipment, structures, materials, events, and environment to detect and assess problems.  Identify the cause and evaluate results for the best solution.
10. *Adhere to procedures, regulations and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
11. *May grease, adjust and make emergency repairs to equipment.
12. *Monitor progress of tasks and inspect completed work to ensure quality.
13. *Investigate discrepancies and report them to management, recommending improvements to resolve issues.
14. *Maintain a good relationship with workers and customer.
15. *Prepare records and reports as needed.
16. This position may require travel between work sites; may be required to drive a company vehicle; may be required to tow loaded or unloaded trailer with truck.
17. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Must meet all requirements of the Tractor Operation position;
• At least one year’s experience in operating tractors or other heavy equipment.
• Ability to follow verbal and written directions and instructions.
• Experience working with adults with disabilities preferred;
• Knowledge of company safety policies and procedures;
• Knowledge of departmental operations, procedures, and organizational policies;
• Ability to manage material resources and time, and to work independently and as a team;
• Knowledge of specialized departmental equipment used in grounds keeping;
• Ability to train employees in proper departmental practices and procedures, including safety and proper use of PPE, tools and equipment;
• Ability to communicate effectively; to present information and respond to questions from staff, customers, and others; and to escalate matters appropriately;
• Human relations skills to build effective working relationships;
• Mathematical ability including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division;
• Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities;
• Demonstrated organizational, problem solving and common sense skills;

 

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED

 

 

CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES REQUIRED:

The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements:

 

Valid Driver's License

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

 

• Maneuvering over uneven ground
• Maneuvering in, around, and on equipment
• Climbing and working from high platforms
• Reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate levers, and steering wheel
• Bending, stooping, and reaching
• Lifting or moving tools, equipment and/or materials up to 50 pounds

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed at a customer’s location on job sites in a construction environment with various tools, and mechanical, electrical and construction equipment.  Transporting to work locations within the site.  At times, may be required to work in confined spaces. Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.  Travel between facilities and work locations may be required.
