POSITION SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, employees in this job class operate heavy equipment such as cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractor with pan or scrapper attachments to maintain and repair roads, parking facilities, airfields, and firebreaks. This job class requires knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance programs for roads, parking facilities, and airfields. Heavy Equipment Operator with CDL Lead acts as a lead to lower level staff.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
1. *Operates heavy equipment used in excavation, backfilling, and loading operations used to excavate, load, or move dirt, gravel or other materials. Equipment may include backhoe, large and small tractors, loader, trencher, grader blade, snow blade, dump truck, flatbed truck, pickup truck, tractor-trailer, hand and portable electric tools.
2. *Operates a straight truck, over 4 tons, usually 10 wheels.
3. *Monitors and reviews equipment, structures, materials, events, and environment to detest and assess problems. Identifies the cause and evaluates results for the best solution.
4. *Reads and interprets grade and slope stakes and simple plans.
5. *Adheres to procedures, regulations and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
6. *Drives a truck to transport materials, merchandise, equipment or workers between various types of locations.
7. *May grease, adjust and make emergency and minor repairs to equipment to keep in good working order.
8. May load/unload materials to/from truck.
9. *Responds to emergency calls after normal work hours.
10. *Prioritizes and assigns tasks, including coordination of work schedules to ensure coverage.
11. *Maintains and manages material resources and time, orders needed materials, and accounts for materials on paper. Completes work within allotted time limits and at acceptable quality standards.
12. *Trains and assists workers in performing duties, working alongside them on the same tasks.
13. *Monitors progress of tasks and inspects completed work to ensure quality.
14. *Investigates discrepancies and reports them to management, recommending improvements to resolve issues.
15. *Maintains a good relationship with workers and customers.
16. *Knows and trains workers in the safe and proper use of products and equipment to meet quality and safety standards.
17. *Prepares records and reports as needed.
18. *Frequent travel to work sites is required.
19. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Two or more years of work experience in roads and ground maintenance, or demonstrated ability to properly use heavy equipment, and knowledge of road maintenance.
• CDL or other special classification of operator’s license is required.
• Mathematics to calculate material usage, complete logs, time sheets, notate mileage, and to accurately use measuring tools, equipment and devices.
• Knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance practices, repairs and techniques.
• Ability to follow directions, instructions, structured process and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively to provide information, signal others as needed, complete daily records, and to act responsively to inquiries and requests from vendors, customers, management, and to escalate the matters appropriately.
• Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time and adapt to changing work priorities.
• Ability to follow established safety rules applicable to heavy equipment operators, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE. Also, able to train others in these safety practices.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities, and to build effective working relationships with staff, customers and others.
• Demonstrated organizational problem-solving and common sense skills
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED
Technical/other training
CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES REQUIRED:
The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements:
ClassA License Hazmat End
Valid Driver's License
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:
• Maneuvering over uneven ground
• Maneuvering in, around, and on equipment
• Climbing and working from high platforms
• Reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate levers, and steering wheel
• Bending, stooping, and reaching
• Lifting or moving tools, equipment and/or materials up to 50 pounds
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed at a customer’s location on job sites in a construction environment with various tools, and mechanical, electrical and construction equipment. Transporting to work locations within the site. At times, may be required to work in confined spaces. Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat. Travel between facilities and work locations may be required.
