FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: 
Under limited supervision, the Grounds Maintenance Laborer Lead Worker leads a work team of diverse individuals, prioritizing, assigning and coordinating team activities to maintain landscaped areas, roads, drainage areas and parking lots of assigned facilities on commercial or public facilities.  Employees in this position ensure that grounds are maintained in safe and pristine condition. This job class requires practical skill and knowledge of grounds keeping practices, procedures, supplies and equipment and the ability to perform the grounds keeping job functions with attention to knowing and using safe work practices. 

 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:
1. *Prioritize and assign tasks, including coordination of work schedules to ensure coverage, rebalancing as necessary for special projects and customer satisfaction.
2. *Maintain supplies, stock, and equipment to ensure proper operation and safe condition.
3. *Train and assist workers in performing duties, working alongside them on the same tasks.
4. *Understand and train workers in the safe and proper use of products and equipment to meet quality and safety standards.
5. *Mow grass with walking-type or riding mowers (less than 2000 lbs).
6. *Use a string trimmer in areas inaccessible to mowers.
7. *Pull weeds and maintain flower beds.
8. Use a leaf and/or snow blower.
9. *Manually pick up and properly dispose of trash, leaves, and limbs and provide a clean and neat appearance of the grounds.
10. Trim/prune hedges, shrubs and trees using shears, saws and other hand or power tools.
11. Edge around walks, flower beds, buildings and walls using hedge trimmers, clippers and edging tools to maintain overall appearance of landscape vegetation and grounds.
12. Repair fencing and gates.  Install posts for fencing and gates, and remove vegetation from fencing.
13. Plant grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.
14. Monitor equipment used and report any malfunction or other issues.
15. Direct traffic using hand signals or traffic signage.
16. Frequently travel to work sites.
17. May be required to drive company pick-up while towing a trailer.
18. Complete basic paperwork and calculate materials and time.
19. *Monitor progress of tasks and inspect completed work to ensure quality.
20. *Investigate discrepancies and report them to management, recommending improvements to resolve issues.
21. *Maintain a good relationship with workers and customer.
22. *Prepare records and reports as needed.
23. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned, including snow/ice removal and cleaning offices and/or workshop areas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must meet all requirements of the worker position being led.
• At least one year of work experience in grounds keeping, with knowledge of grounds maintenance standards, techniques and materials;
• Ability to work collaboratively and professionally on a team with various skill levels, and of various ethnic, religious, cultural and other backgrounds;
• Ability to follow instructions, to present information and to respond to staff, customers and others through good communication skills;
• Ability to work safely and train others in safety and the proper use of PPE, tools and equipment, practices and procedures to accomplish the task assigned;
• Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time;
• Mathematical ability including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division;
• Ability to work independently and as a team;
• Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities;
• Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills;
• Customer service skills to act responsibly to customer inquiries and requests and escalate matters appropriately.
• Ability to travel to various facilities

 

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED

 

 

CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES REQUIRED:

The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements:

 

Valid Driver's License

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance:

 

• Standing and walking
• Maneuvering around equipment 
• Bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and shoveling
• Lifting of equipment up to 50 pounds
• Pushing or pulling equipment weighing up to 75 pounds
• Carrying a 20-pound backpack blower

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed at a customer’s location on job sites in a construction environment with various tools, and mechanical, electrical and construction equipment.  Transporting to work locations within the site.  At times, may be required to work in confined spaces. Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.  Travel between facilities and work locations may be required.
